What is a Limiting Belief?

A limiting belief is a story we tell ourselves that holds us back; a subconscious pattern of thinking that feels true, even when it hurts us. In Awareness Journey, the main character, Tan, finds himself in a miserable town called Haides, where the people are stuck in cycles of guilt, shame, and anger. They believe this painful life is all there is for them. One man, Don, communicates, “I really want to leave. I hate it here… but I just can’t. I don’t know why.”

This is the voice of a limiting belief, creating a prison in the mind, making people feel powerless to change, even when the door to a better life is open. They form our mental roadblocks. They are not facts, but they feel as real as stone walls.

How Limiting Beliefs Create Barriers to Success

A limiting belief does more than just make us feel bad. It actively builds barriers to success, shaping how we see everything around us.

In the book, this is explained as living in a low “attractor field.”

Your dominant feeling—like fear, anger, or shame—acts like a magnet, attracting thoughts and experiences that match it.

For example, if your limiting belief is “The world is a dangerous place,” you will constantly notice threats and dangers, overlooking beauty and opportunity. Danielle, a guide in the story, explains, “If we see the world as a dangerous place to be feared, we will see all of the dangers and not notice other things.”

This focus then leads to actions driven by fear, which produce results that seem to confirm the fearful belief.

Tan himself has been controlled by anger for a long time. “My hatred and anger grew until it started causing health and stress problems for me.”

His anger was a limiting belief that led him to see himself as only a victim of a cruel world. This belief pushed people away, created conflict, and damaged his health.

It was a significant barrier to his personal peace and happiness.

The Process of Belief Reprogramming

The good news is that a limiting belief can be changed. The process is a conscious, daily practice of choosing new thoughts until they become new beliefs.

Tan learns this through his guides when he is told, “Your thoughts cause your feelings. If you don’t want to go back to Haides, change your thoughts… You choose your thoughts, nobody else does.”

This is the essence of reprogramming belief.

  1. Notice the Thought: Catch yourself in the act of thinking the limiting belief. Tan practices this: “I constantly looked for my habit to express itself. I watched for the thoughts. I caught myself in action and put a halt to it immediately.”
  2. Stop and Replace: Do not just fight the old thought. Immediately replace it with a better one. Tan says, “I intentionally replaced them with a positive substitute. I could usually find something close by, like the sun shining and a blue sky.”
  3. Practice Continually: Like building a muscle, this takes repeated effort. Danielle warns, “It is virtually impossible to move on without a conscious, continual effort.”

This practice breaks the old subconscious patterns and writes new, empowering ones in their place.

Breaking Through Your Mental Roadblocks

Moving from a life limited by fear to one guided by possibility requires breaking down your mental roadblocks. The characters in the higher levels of awareness in the book, like those on “Progression Island,” have done this. They operate from courage, reason, and love, seeing themselves as part of a larger whole and focusing on contributing their unique gift.

A key step is forgiveness. “You cannot be happy until you learn to forgive… Until you forgive yourself and others, you will continue to harbor negative emotions of guilt and resentment. You can’t move on until you are free from those feelings.”

Forgiveness is the act of removing a limiting belief that says the past must control the future.

Another step is taking full responsibility: “It is your life. It is your choice.”

A limiting belief is only powerful as long as it goes unchallenged.
