Many people want to know how to take control of their lives.

The good news is that a powerful tool is within your reach–and closer than you might think. It’s closer than most anyone can conceive of, really.

That tool is a routine.

By building strong daily habits that are consistently practiced, you can start taking back your control.

This is a key lesson from Daniel Slot’s book, Awareness Journey: The Passage to Happiness, a book that shows our lives are greatly shaped by our habits and thoughts.

When we build good routines, we build a better life.

How Habits Shape Your World

In Awareness Journey, the main character, Tan, comes to visit a dark town called Haides, whose gloomy citizens are trapped in constant pain, living eternally in guilt, fear, and anger.

All of them feel like they have no power over anything–life, fate, their own selves, anything. One of the locals, Don, even says, “I really want to leave. I hate it here… but I just can’t. I don’t know why.”

The people of Haides are representative of what happens when people are stuck with bad habits: their negative feelings are comfortable because they are familiar.

Haides, and the suffering they feel there, is a prison of their own making.

This is to say that our habits create our reality. If your habits are negative, your life will also feel negative. Daniel explains that our “thoughts cause feelings that determine actions.”

Bad thoughts lead to bad feelings, which lead to bad actions, and so on. This cycle keeps you stuck. Therefore, to break free, you must change your habits. This is the first step to taking back control of your life’s path.

Routines Create Structure and Success

Without a plan, your day can feel chaotic and unstructured. This can offer up a field of hindrances if you don’t look at it too carefully.

A routine, though, gives you a plan. It creates structure and success.

Structure means having a clear path to follow and a greater sense of security. When you have a structure, you don’t waste energy deciding what to do next.

You just follow your plan.

In the narrative of Awareness Journey, when Tan decides to leave Haides for good, he finds a path blocked by an old sign. The sign had the letters E, G, and O on it. These letters spell out and represent the ego—the part of us that loves negative feelings.

One could turn back and return to Haides, but one can also be bold. Moving the sign away reveals the path to “Happiness Way.”

Your routine helps you build up the confidence to move that sign. It pushes aside the chaos and confusion of your ego, revealing the clear path forward to a better life and a more grounded happiness.

A routine provides the life stability that your mind craves.

Daily Consistency Builds a Stable Life

Life stability doesn’t come from one big change. It comes from many small, consistent actions.

This is living with a daily consistency.

Doing a small, positive thing every day is more powerful than doing one big thing once. Think of it like building a brick wall. You lay one brick every day. You just don’t prop a big brick and call it a day.

Soon, you will have a strong wall.

The people in Haides did not have consistency in their lives. They lived moment to moment, led only by their worst feelings. As such, they had no stability.

This is compared to the people Tan meets later in a better place, Progression Island, who have built stable lives through consistent, positive work, showing how daily consistency in your actions builds a life you can count on.

This is a crucial part of taking back your control from chaos.

Good Habits Boost Your Productivity

Productivity habits are routines that help you get things done.

When you are productive, you feel capable and strong. You are moving forward. Simple habits can make a really big difference in the vast muddle of life.

In the Village of Commerce, Tan learns about pride and hard work. There, he sees that successful people have internal systems they work with. They have habits that help them achieve their goals.

Slot points out that your thoughts create your feelings, your feelings cause our actions, and your actions determine your results.

Good productivity habits create a cycle of positive actions and positive results. This cycle gives you more and more control over your life.

Personal Discipline Is Your Inner Strength

The hardest part of building a routine is personal discipline.

Discipline is doing what you should do, even when you don’t feel like it. Your ego will try to stop you; it will tell you it’s too hard, or you can start tomorrow.

Personal discipline is the muscle that says “no” to the ego.

Slot teaches that “It is your life. It is your choice.” This is a powerful truth.

You always have the power to choose your actions. Bob, one of Tan’s guides, says, “You choose your thoughts, nobody else does.” Building personal discipline is how you make the choice to follow your routine. It is how you commit to taking back your control every single day.

Your Journey to Taking Back Your Control

You don’t need to make huge changes all at once. Start small. Choose one positive habit and go from there. Maybe it’s going for a 10-minute walk each day. Maybe it’s writing down one thing you are grateful for each morning. This small routine is your first step.

Your routine is your path out of your own “Haides.”

It is the way to build structure and success, life stability, daily consistency, strong productivity habits, and unshakable personal discipline.

By sticking to your routine, you are actively taking back your control and building a happier, more powerful life.
