Many of us feel lost, pushed around by life’s challenges. We ask ourselves:
How can I take control of my life?
The answer lies in a simple but powerful idea: why self-awareness equates to control. This is the first and most crucial step on the path to a happier life. To develop self-control and awareness, it is essential to follow a specific process or steps that guide you toward better emotional regulation and decision-making.
By understanding what is happening inside you, you stop being a passenger and start steering your own ship.
What Is Self-Awareness and Emotional Intelligence?
Self-awareness is knowing you exist and knowing that you know it. It sounds simple, but it’s what makes humans special.
In Awareness Journey, Bob explains this by comparing us to animals. A dog knows it is on a boat, but it doesn’t know that it knows it. We do. We are aware of our existence and our separation from other things.
But with self-awareness, you can begin to see the patterns in your life. Self-awareness involves different aspects, such as recognizing your thoughts, feelings, and actions. You can see how your thoughts and feelings lead to your actions.
This is why self-awareness equates to control.

The Prison of Unawareness
The book begins in a terrible place called Haides. It is a town filled with sadness, anger, and fear. The people there are stuck. They feel like victims of their circumstances and blame others, their past, or the world for their pain. They are all living in what Slot calls the lowest levels of “conscious awareness.” This is a state where they are aware of their existence, but they are not aware of their connection to their environment or their power to change it.
Their painful emotions control them because they don’t understand them. Their feelings and actions are never evaluated, so they remain stuck in the same patterns. They live in a prison, and they don’t even know they hold the key. Failing to recognize the consequences of their emotions and actions keeps them trapped. This is the opposite of control. This is what life looks like without self-awareness.
Different Aspects of Thoughts, Feelings, and Actions
So, how do you break out? The key is understanding a simple sequence. In Awareness Journey, Bob and Danielle teach a crucial lesson:
“Our thoughts create our feelings. Our feelings cause our actions, and our actions determine our results.”
Various stimuli, both internal and external, can trigger the thoughts that start this cycle. Think about that. If you constantly think, “I am a failure,” you will feel sad and hopeless. Those feelings will lead you to give up easily. The result? Your failure seems to confirm your original thought that you are a failure. It’s a painful cycle.
This cycle is automatic when you are not self-aware. You don’t see that the thought started it all.
But when you become self-aware, you can spot the thought. Being aware of your mental state helps you make better choices and interrupt the cycle. This is why self-awareness equates to control. You can’t always control the first thought that pops into your head, but you can control the second one and the one after that.
You can choose a different thought.
Your Ego: The Guard at the Gate
A significant part of this journey is understanding your ego. Your ego is not your enemy, but it can act like an overprotective parent. Its main job is to protect you, but it often does more harm than good. It makes negative feelings like fear, anger, and guilt feel comfortable because they are familiar.
In Haides, a mysterious figure named Lou represents this. He would ask people questions that made them feel worse. Even though it hurt, people kept inviting Lou back. No one truly wanted to feel pain, but their ego convinced them it was normal. The ego uses familiar negative feelings as a means to maintain control, even if it is harmful.
Their pain was their “normal.” Their ego convinced them this was just how life is, so they never tried to leave.
Awareness Journey explains that the ego’s “secret payoff from negativity is the ego’s only source of energy.” It feeds on these bad feelings to feel in control, even as it traps you.
To take control of your life for real, you must learn to see your ego’s tricks. You must decide that comfort is not the same as happiness.
The First Step to Taking Control
The hero of the story, Tan, finally decides he has had enough of the pain in Haides. With help, he finds a hidden path out of town.
The path was always there, but it was blocked by an old, dirty sign with three faded letters: E, G, and O.
Your ego is that sign. It blocks your path to happiness and control. The first step to moving it is self-awareness. You must make a conscious effort to watch your thoughts. Your thoughts and habits should be regularly reviewed to identify negative patterns.
When you feel anger, fear, or sadness, stop and ask, “What thought is causing this feeling? Is this thought true? Is this habit helping me?” It’s essential to take a moment to check in with your emotions.
This is not easy.

“Unless we take control of that sequence—the thoughts, feelings, and actions sequence—we are destined to remain in the attractor field that we are currently in.”
It takes practice. But the more you do it, the more natural it becomes.
A Brighter and Clearer Future
A lack of self-awareness can lead to feeling stuck, unhappy, and disconnected from your true interests and passions. When you understand why self-awareness equates to control, you realize that your life is not predetermined. You are not meant to be unhappy. The people in Haides thought they belonged there. Tan thought so, too, until he realized he had a choice.
Bob puts it perfectly: “It is your life. It is your choice.”
The freedom to choose your path is the ultimate result of self-awareness, allowing you to express your true self and pursue what matters most to you.
This is the ultimate truth. Self-awareness gives you the ability to see that you have a choice in every moment. You can choose your thoughts and decide to forgive instead of seeking revenge. You can choose to see possibility instead of fear.
This is how you take control of your life.
